Technical guide to understand retention levels, accessory compatibility for your sidearm, and the mounting systems for your first-line setup.
What is holster retention?
Holster retention is the system that keeps the equipment secure; in this technical guide we analyze the retention levels of pistol holsters and their operational importance. Retention keeps the weapon inside the holster, preventing accidental draws, drops, or unwanted access by third parties.
At Viking Layer Forge, we understand that retention is not an accessory, but a discipline of engineering. That is why in our Valkyrie HRS series we have implemented the Side-Lock™ system to provide this security without sacrificing draw speed. Our systems balance mechanical security with the need for an intuitive and fluid draw.
There are different types of retention, designed for different uses and situations. Specifically, two: Passive Retention and Active Retention.

RETENTION LEVELS
Security Classification: Retention Levels in Tactical Holsters
This is the basic level of retention, widely used in sport shooting (IPSC) and by shooters who prioritize draw speed over mechanical security.
Retention Mechanics
Retention is based exclusively on friction. It does not require any additional manual movement to release the weapon; a firm, direct pull is enough.
Operational Environments
Normally used in IPSC competitions, sport shooting and dry-fire training where there is no risk of weapon snatching or extreme tactical maneuvers.
This level of retention is the standard for tactical, military and MilSim use. It adds an active physical lock that prevents the sidearm from coming out accidentally during transitions, sudden movements or pulls.
Retention Mechanics
This type of holster requires a prior and deliberate manual movement to release the mechanism before drawing. Without this mechanical action, the weapon remains physically locked against drops or snatch attempts.
Operational Environments
CQB assault units, advanced MilSim configurations, patrol use and any scenario where absolute equipment security is critical during deployment.
Usage and Safety Specification
Our Valkyrie HRS Tactical range sits at this level thanks to the Side-Lock™ system.
Viking Layer Forge strictly discourages the use of our systems with real firearms. Product designed exclusively for recreational use, tactical training and simulation.
This is the high-security standard for duty holsters, designed to combine two independent active locking mechanisms together with passive friction retention.
Retention Mechanics
It requires disabling two distinct physical safeties through a coordinated manual sequence before starting the draw. It combines mechanical systems, such as upper pivoting hoods and automatic thumb releases, which protect the platform against unauthorized extractions.
Operational Environments
Public order units, public safety, urban patrol and high-density environments where there is a critical risk of struggle, physical contact or third-party disarm attempts.
Doctrine and Muscle Memory
The increase in mechanical security reduces the risk of theft, but it slows raw draw speed. It requires specific and repetitive training to internalize the deactivation of the safeties in one fluid muscle-memory motion under high operational stress.
It represents the highest standard of mechanical security and anti-theft engineering in the industry, configured exclusively for critical, extreme-risk scenarios.
Retention Mechanics
It integrates three independent active mechanical locks that operate under a strict and mandatory deactivation sequence. It adds pivoting covers and redundant latches over the Level III architecture, fully securing the sidearm.
Operational Environments
Riot intervention units, custody and transport of high-risk detainees, hostile crowd control and dignitary escort missions in high-density areas.
Tactical Trade-Off: Security vs Reaction
The physical inviolability of this level introduces an unavoidable compromise in draw time. By prioritizing absolute retention against third parties over raw response speed, its deployment requires intensive training doctrine to avoid motor failures during the draw cycle under extreme stress.
THE VALKYRIE TACTICAL HOLSTER AND THE SIDE-LOCK™
THE HOLSTER VALKYRIE
The Valkyrie HRS Tactical holster was created as a system developed for practical use.
Its purpose is clear: to provide active retention, real compatibility and modularity.
THE SIDE-LOCK™ SYSTEM
The Side-Lock™ System is the operating core of the Valkyrie range.
Designed to provide an immediate tactical response, the geometry combined with the mechanism physically locks at calculated support points.
The system emits a slight “click” when holstering, confirming that the weapon is secured.
COMPATIBILITY, MODULARITY AND ADAPTABILITY
The Valkyrie HRS Tactical is conceived as a modular retention system, not as a conventional pistol holster with limited options.
This allows compatibility with multiple models, all types of accessories and a wide variety of carry mounts.
The Valkyrie HRS Tactical series has been created around a common adaptable chassis design. Each variant is manufactured according to the specific dimensions and geometries of the selected model, guaranteeing secure locking and a fast draw.

The modular system allows you to change the type of mounting according to the game, your equipment or simply how you prefer to carry the holster at any given time. All of this while keeping the holster perfectly secure and without losing the advantages of the HRS System, its 40-position rotating system with 9° increments to adjust it to the most comfortable angle.
Tactical Mounts
The holster is prepared to be used with the most common mounting options on the market:
|
Fixed screw-on paddle (MOLLE systems)To attach the holster directly to plate carriers, battle belts or any equipment that uses standard MOLLE webbing.
|
|
Male adapter (Safariland QLS system)The ideal option if you use this quick-attachment system to change the holster position or remove it in seconds without disassembling anything else.
|
|
Direct “Duty Belt” mount (up to 50 mm)A clean and direct attachment designed for rigid belts or duty belts up to 50 mm wide, ideal for almost any type of belt.
